The RSA (SITHFAB021) teaches you how to serve alcohol safely and legally in Australia. In a single, trainer‑led session (face‑to‑face or virtual), you’ll learn the rules, responsibilities, and practical steps required to work in any licensed venue. On successful completion, you’ll receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment.
If you want to work in a bar, club, restaurant, hotel, bottle shop, or anywhere alcohol is sold or served, you must have a valid RSA certificate. It’s a legal requirement across Australia designed to keep patrons safe and minimise alcohol-related harm.
You’ll understand liquor laws, how to check ID correctly, recognise signs of intoxication, refuse service politely, and handle difficult situations with confidence—so you protect patrons, your employer, and yourself while providing great service.
To work in any licensed venue, you must complete the official RSA unit of competency (SITHFAB021). This guarantees your training is compliant and accepted by employers.
Serving alcohol without an RSA is against the law. Completing an RSA protects you, your employer, and the community.
After completing your training, you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment, which is your proof of qualification. Employers will ask for this before you can start working.
RSA certificates are accepted in most states, but NSW has unique rules. If you trained interstate, you may need to complete a bridging course before working in New South Wales.
In most states, your RSA certification does not expire. NSW, however, requires refresher training every 3 years to keep your skills up to date.
